Took shortcuts. This is the classic recipe that I have always used and I'm asked to bring them to every family gathering. Here's a tip for making things much quicker, less messy and a little fancier: Mix until creamy. Put it all into a plastic food storage bag. Seal the top, snip a lower corner to make a hole and squeeze the filling into the egg halves.-24 Jul 2008

Altered ingredient amounts.Made this recipe exactly as written but found the filling to be really dry and a tad bland. So, I doubled the mayonnaise and mustard and tried it that way. I would give this recipe as written 2 stars but when doctored, it rates 4-5. That's the nice thing about deviled eggs, you can keep tasting until you like it then stuff the white.-24 Jul 2008

Altered ingredient amounts.I've never made deviled eggs before, but these were easy and delicious! I needed more dressing and mustard than the recipe called for, but they came out great and even my mother was impressed.-24 Jul 2008

Sausage rolls, scotch eggs & other classic picnic dishes, made fancy.

Dear reader, we may be in the midst of a cold and rainy spring, we may finally be able to eat inside, and we may be well and truly sick of park meet ups, but would it really feel like the start of a British summer if we didn’t have at least one picnic? The answer is no, no it would not. So, it’s time to dust off that hamper, pick up some gins in tins, and head to your closest grassy area.

But whatever your spread of choice, there are some picnic staples that we can all agree on: sausage rolls, scotch eggs, sweet treats, and the like.

With this in mind, I’ve gathered together a list of recipes that promise to give a new lease of life to your classic picnic dishes. Ham and cheese sandwiches, you say? Why not jazz it up by trying mozzarella and salami baguettes with sun-dried tomatoes?

Now all you need to do is dig out the Tupperware and get ready to wow your pals with your culinary delights. Just don’t forget to pack your cagoule.

52 Fun Picnic Food Ideas That Are so Good You'll Never Eat Inside Again

We swear these delicious (and portable!) snacks, sides, and mains taste better al fresco.

Warmer weather and sunnier skies have us dreaming about beach days, backyard hangouts (with delicious barbecue side dishes, of course!), and plenty of picnic food ideas. And we&rsquore not talking about your typical al fresco fare &mdash we&rsquove rounded up picnic food ideas that'll please kids and adults &mdash colorful vegetarian recipes as well as hearty meat lovers' eats. It&rsquos the perfect time of year to pack a wicker basket, break out a checkered blanket, and head to your favorite patch of grass (the backyard counts!) to soak up some sun.

So what food do you bring to a picnic? The key to great picnic food is an array of sides, snacks, or apps that don&rsquot have to be served at a particular temperature &mdash nothing ruins a day in the park faster than your steaming meatball sub melting the ice cream it was packed with. Room temperature food is best, or options that can sit for a bit without losing flavor. Some of the recipes we recommend, like grain salads or hearty baguette sandwiches, actually get better as they sit and the flavors meld. Bonus points for easy make-ahead meals that you can prep the day before&mdash which means more time outside and less time in the kitchen. And brownie points for anyone who brings dessert&mdash because there&rsquos nothing better than ending a serene day with a little something sweet.

Love Deviled Eggs? Try These!

Ingredients

2 teaspoons Dijon mustard

1 tablespoon minced shallot or onion

1/4 teaspoon Tabasco sauce

Salt and pepper , to taste

Method

(See how to steam hard boiled eggs.) Fill a saucepan with an inch of water and insert a steamer basket. Bring the water to a boil and place the eggs in the steamer basket. (If you don't have a steamer basket, you can just place the eggs directly in about 3/4 inch of water.)

Cover the pan and let the eggs steam from the boiling water for 17 minutes for 12 large eggs, or 15 minutes for 6 large eggs. Reduce cooking time by a couple minutes if using regular size (not large) eggs. Then shock with cold water and peel.

Peel the eggs. Using a sharp knife, slice each egg in half, lengthwise. Gently remove the yolk halves and place in a small mixing bowl. Arrange the egg white halves on a serving platter.

Using a fork, mash up the yolks and add mustard, mayonnaise, onion, tabasco, and a sprinkling of salt and pepper. Add more mayonnaise as necessary to get to the creamy consistency you want.

Pipe through a piping bag (star tip) or simply use a spoon to put the egg yolk mixture into the egg white halves. Sprinkle with paprika.

Red Lentil Hummus
Red lentils blend into a dip that’s every bit as rich and creamy as one made with chickpeas. I spice it liberally with turmeric, cumin, coriander, and cardamom, so it’s bursting with curry flavor.
